Assam: Cricketer Uma Chhetri Reflects on Debut Amidst Personal Challenges
Guwahati, 11th July: After completing a rigorous series of Tests, ODIs, and T20Is against South Africa, cricketer Uma Chhetri has returned to her hometown of Kandhulimari village in Bokakhat. In an exclusive interview from her home, Uma shared her exhilarating experience of making her debut with the Indian national women’s cricket team.
Uma vividly recounted her emotions upon debuting in the T20 team on July 7, marking a significant milestone in her burgeoning career. Despite not debuting in the One Day or Test matches, she absorbed invaluable lessons while observing her teammates’ performances from the sidelines.
“We played quite well in One Day matches, with Smriti Mandhana giving centuries upon centuries. We have several good players in the team. Actually, I didn’t debut in the One day, neither in the test series. But while sitting outside I was watching the match, while reflecting how they have prepared, how the players play. So, basically, I learnt from them. Like how they managed the situation after losing a wicket. As a batsman who responsibly they handled the situation. And so this is what I have learnt in the one-day match”, says Uma Chettry.
During the series, Uma faced a personal challenge as her home was inundated with floodwaters. Despite this, she remained undeterred and focused on her cricketing commitments. Her dedication amidst adversity has earned admiration from her local community and cricket fans nationwide.
Looking ahead, Uma Chhetri is preparing for the upcoming Asia Cup and will rejoin the Indian team on July 15. Her journey stands as a testament to her unwavering spirit and dedication to cricket, making her the pride of Bokakhat and a rising star in Indian women’s cricket.
