Assam: Cultural Extravaganza Concludes, Nurturing Young Talent in Barpeta
Guwahati: A 15-day vibrant summer workshop, a joint initiative by the Department of Cultural Affairs and the District Administration, Barpeta, drew to a successful close yesterday, July 24, 2024. Held across four LACs of Barpeta, the workshops saw close to 400 students from eight different venues immerse themselves in the rich heritage of Sattriya culture and other diverse art forms.
Moushumi Chetia, Additional District Commissioner (Culture), ACS, elaborated on the extensive curriculum, which delved into various aspects of Sattriya culture, including the graceful Sattriya Dance, the energetic Bhurtal Nritya, and the melodious Borgeet. Beyond traditional forms, the workshops also embraced contemporary expressions like drama, mime, and modern songs. A special emphasis was placed on popularising the timeless compositions of literary giants such as Ambikagiri Raichoudhury, Purushottam Das, and the iconic “bard of the Brahmaputra,” Bhupen Hazarika.
Bidyut Bikash Das, Cultural Development Officer, Barpeta, highlighted the core objective behind these workshops: to ignite creativity among the district’s children and promote their holistic development through engaging physical and mental activities. While the curtains fell on most workshops yesterday, the Sorbhog centre, also under Barpeta district, is scheduled to conclude on July 27.
These workshops hold profound significance for students in a culturally rich region like Barpeta. Engaging with traditional art forms not only strengthens their connection to their roots but also cultivates a deeper appreciation for their unique identity. This exposure, coupled with modern artistic expressions, fosters a well-rounded artistic sensibility among the participants. “Beyond careers, participation in these activities fosters crucial life skills like discipline, teamwork, and confidence, empowering students to become more creative and culturally aware citizens,” stated Cultural Development Officer Bidyut Bikash Das, underscoring the broader impact of the initiative.
