Darrang: In a move aimed at improving border management and enhancing cross-border travel, the Central Government has officially designated the Darranga land check post in Tamulpur district, Assam, as an Immigration Check Post.
This step, effective from November 1, 2024, allows entry into and exit from India for all categories of passengers holding valid travel documents, as stipulated by the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950.
The announcement was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, designating the Chief Immigration Officer of the Bureau of Immigration as the ‘Civil Authority’ for this new check post, empowered by the Foreigners Order of 1948. This appointment is expected to facilitate smoother immigration processing and strengthen border management in Assam, a state with critical transit points due to its proximity to Bhutan and Bangladesh.
“The Central Government hereby designates Darranga Land Check Post of Tamulpur District in Assam as an authorized Immigration Check Post for entry and exit with valid travel documents,” stated the official notification, highlighting the government’s commitment to regulated and streamlined immigration.
Darranga’s location near the international border grants it historical importance, and this new designation reflects its growing role in regional connectivity. With increased traffic and trade agreements fostering cross-border exchanges, the demand for a formalized immigration checkpoint had become pressing. This new status allows the check post to support trade, tourism, and cultural exchange more efficiently, meeting rising demands for regulated cross-border movement.
Assam’s strategic location and shared borders make Darranga crucial for regional cooperation. By formalizing this entry-exit point, the Indian government is taking steps to regulate the flow of people and goods, facilitating trade and strengthening diplomatic ties with neighboring countries.
