Assam: Darrang Youth Congress Stages Protest in Mangaldoi After Attack on MP Rakibul Hussain

Guwahati: Assam Police today detained Darrang Youth Congress President Abdullah Sheikh and several others following a massive demonstration by its members in Mangaldoi.

The protest was staged in response to the recent attack on Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain along with his son Tanzil Hussain, and his security personnel in Nagaon district on February 20.

Hundreds of Youth Congress members marched through the streets of Mangaldoi, demanding justice for Hussain and condemning the assault.

The demonstration was marked by loud anti-government slogans such as ‘BJP government go back,’ ‘CM Himanta Biswa Sarma go back,’ and ‘Assam Police go back,’ reflecting the protesters’ dissatisfaction with the state administration’s handling of the case.

Addressing the media, Abdullah Sheikh questioned the police’s response, stating, “Is the police taking care of the culprits?”

Meanwhile, MP Rakibul Hussain has officially filed an FIR at Nagaon Sadar Police Station regarding the attack. The complaint, lodged in the presence of his son, Tanzil Hussain, and several Congress workers, named 22 individuals allegedly involved in the assault.

According to eyewitnesses, the attack took place at Natun Bazar while Hussain was on his way to attend a Congress workers’ meeting in Gunabari. The assailants, with their faces covered in black cloth, reportedly waved black flags before launching the assault, leaving Hussain’s bodyguard injured.

The incident has heightened political tensions in the region, prompting calls for swift action against those responsible.
