Assam: Deceased girl allegedly raped in post-mortem room of Karimganj Civil Hospital

Guwahati, 8th April: A devastating incident unfolded in Bajaricha police station in Karimganj, where a girl in Class IX reportedly took her own life by consuming a poisonous substance on Friday (April 5). The tragedy took a horrifying turn when it was revealed that the deceased girl had allegedly been raped in the post-mortem room of Karimganj Civil Hospital.

In response to the girl’s suicide, authorities swiftly intervened, with police and a magistrate arriving at the scene to recover the body. Subsequently, the body was transported to the post-mortem room of the Civil Hospital in Karimganj late at night for further examination.

During the subsequent post-mortem examination conducted the following day, doctors discovered disturbing signs of injury and scarring on various parts of the girl’s body, including intimate areas.

Anju Ravidas, the brother of the individual responsible for overseeing the post-mortem room, was detained by police. Following interrogation, he allegedly confessed to his involvement in the incident.

The post-mortem room of Karimganj Civil Hospital has previously been subject to complaints regarding mistreatment of deceased individuals’ family members. However, this latest incident has shocked the community, surpassing all bounds of humanity and prompting widespread condemnation.

As investigations into the case progress, authorities face mounting pressure to ensure justice is served for the victim and her family. Additionally, there are calls to implement measures to prevent such abhorrent acts from recurring in the future, underscoring the urgent need for reform and accountability within the healthcare system.
