Assam Declares 2025 “The Year of Reading,” Unveils Major Literary Initiatives

Guwahati: In a bold move to cultivate a robust reading culture, the Assam government has officially designated the year 2025 as “The Year of Reading.” This ambitious declaration, unveiled during the Assam Budget 2025 presentation, signifies a significant investment in the state’s literary landscape.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined a series of strategic initiatives aimed at nurturing both budding authors and avid readers. As a cornerstone of this plan, the government has earmarked funds to provide financial assistance of Rs 25,000 each to 1,000 emerging writers, thereby empowering the next generation of literary talent.

To galvanize literary activity at the grassroots level, a substantial allocation has been made for district-level Granth Mela (book fairs). Each district will receive Rs 5 lakh, while co-districts will be granted Rs 2.5 lakh, enabling them to host vibrant literary gatherings and connect readers with a diverse range of books.

In an innovative approach to integrate reading into official protocol, the government has mandated the use of books as official gifts at government programs. This initiative seeks to elevate the status of books and encourage their dissemination within official circles. Furthermore, government employees are set to receive a one-time grant of Rs 1,000, specifically designated for the purchase of books, fostering a culture of reading within the state’s administrative framework.
