Assam: Developments on Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and Political Landscape

Guwahati, 15th July: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that only eight people have applied for citizenship under the newly amended Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the last four months. Out of these, only two applicants attended their interviews. Sarma highlighted that many Hindu Bengali families prefer proving their Indian citizenship in court rather than applying under CAA, believing they entered India before 1971.

Regarding dropping cases under CAA, Sarma clarified that the government cannot drop any cases but emphasized that applicants should apply via the portal before filing a case, as they are entitled to citizenship.

Mamata Banerjee’s Opposition to CAA:
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, also TMC supremo, announced her intent to push for the revocation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Parliament. Speaking in Kolkata, Banerjee expressed skepticism about the durability of the NDA government and emphasized the central government’s obligation to settle financial dues owed to all states.

Banerjee’s remarks come amidst heightened political tensions and post-election reflections within TMC, positioning the party as a vigilant observer of the evolving political landscape.

These developments underscore ongoing debates and strategies surrounding citizenship laws and political dynamics in India.
