Assam: Dhemaji Court Delivers Justice for Nandita Saikia, Convicts Rintu Sharma in Landmark Verdict

Guwahati: In a momentous decision bringing closure to a four-year-long pursuit of justice, the District and Sessions Court of Dhemaji has convicted Rintu Sharma, a Class IV employee of Moridhal College, for the heinous murder of college student Nandita Saikia. The verdict, delivered by Judge Kalyanjit Saikia, comes just shy of the fourth anniversary of the brutal attack, providing a ray of hope for the victim’s grieving family and the community at large. The court, after a meticulous trial involving the testimonies of 141 witnesses and careful evaluation of all evidence, found Sharma guilty under a slew of IPC sections, including 341 for wrongful restraint, 326 for causing grievous hurt, 307 for attempt to murder, and finally, 302 for murder. The sentence is slated to be pronounced later today.

The tragic incident, etched in the memory of the town, occurred on August 24, 2021, when Rintu Sharma viciously attacked Nandita Saikia with a sharp weapon near the Dhemaji ASTC bus stand in broad daylight. The young student of Moridhal College, who was known for her bright and promising future, succumbed to her grievous injuries the very next day, August 25, 2021, at a nursing home in Dibrugarh. The verdict has been widely welcomed, with many viewing it as a powerful affirmation of the legal system’s commitment to ensuring perpetrators of such crimes are brought to book. This landmark judgment not only serves as a tribute to Nandita but also reinforces public faith in the judiciary’s ability to deliver justice, no matter how long the wait.
