Assam: Dhubri District Sees Massive Eviction Drive Amidst Protests

Dhubri: A sprawling eviction drive unfolded across Dhubri district on Tuesday, as the local administration moved to reclaim approximately 3,500 bighas of government land in Charuwa-Bakhra, Santoshpur, and Chirakuta, located about 55 km from Dhubri town. The large-scale operation saw bulldozers systematically dismantling residential structures, some of which had been in place for decades, though many residents had already opted for voluntary relocation prior to the drive.

Officials indicated that over 2,000 families had been occupying the government khas land for an extended period. This significant eviction forms part of the Assam government’s broader strategy to allocate the land to the Adani Group for the development of a thermal power project, under the aegis of the Assam Power Development Corporation Limited (APDCL).

In an effort to mitigate the impact of the displacement, government sources confirmed that each evicted family would be provided with a one-time financial assistance of ₹50,000. Furthermore, landless families affected by the drive are reportedly being considered for rehabilitation in Boyjer-Alga, falling under the Athani Revenue Circle Officer’s jurisdiction.

However, the situation at the eviction sites quickly escalated as agitated locals resorted to blocking roads and staging protests. The growing unrest prompted a rapid deployment of law enforcement, with Superintendent of Police Leena Doley personally intervening to bring the volatile situation under control amidst ongoing resistance from the displaced.

In a related development, independent MLA Akhil Gogoi’s attempt to visit the eviction site was thwarted by the police, leading to his detention at Chapar Police Station. Sources suggest that Gogoi’s arrival inadvertently fanned the flames of discontent, particularly among a segment of the populace who, despite initial willingness from most families to relocate, subsequently contributed to the chaotic scenes.

Despite assurances from the administration, sporadic protests persisted throughout the day, with affected families vociferously demanding comprehensive rehabilitation and adequate compensation for their displacement.
