Assam: Dhubri Gears Up For Extensive Panchayat Polls, District Administration Promises Fair Representation

Guwahati: The Dhubri district administration has initiated comprehensive measures to facilitate the smooth and transparent conduct of the forthcoming Panchayat elections, as announced during a recent press briefing by District Commissioner Dibakar Nath.

The elections will encompass a wide geographical area, with 128 gaon panchayats, 20 zilla parishad constituency areas, and 10 anchalik panchayats all participating in the electoral process. The district is preparing to accommodate a vast electorate across 1,465 polling stations, strategically located throughout Dhubri, Bilasipara, and Golakganj.

The total electorate for the Dhubri gaon panchayats is substantial, numbering 1,043,193 individuals. This includes 537,445 male voters, 505,736 female voters, and 12 voters registered as “others.” The distribution of voters across the district’s sub-divisions is as follows: 732,841 in Dhubri Sadar, 134,517 in Bilasipara Co-district, and 177,169 in Golakganj Co-district.

The administration has made provisions for candidates to obtain their nomination papers from designated offices, including the Dhubri Rural Development office, Dhubri Zilla Parishad office, Dhubri District Agriculture Officer’s office, Bilasipara Co-district office, and Golakganj Co-district office.

Security measures are in place to safeguard election materials, with strong rooms established in Dhubri, Bilasipara, and Golakganj. A significant aspect of the election is the commitment to ensuring fair representation for women and Scheduled Castes.

Specifically, 10 out of the 20 Dhubri Zilla Parishad seats are reserved for women, and one seat is allocated for Scheduled Castes. Moreover, 50 percent of the president and vice-president positions in the anchalik panchayats will be held by women, with five seats in each panchayat reserved for them. Additionally, 640 ward units within the 128 gaon panchayats are designated for women.

Special provisions extend to specific gaon panchayat posts. The president’s position for 84-Asarikandi village panchayat is reserved for Scheduled Castes, while the president’s position for 108-Almaganj village panchayat is reserved for a Scheduled Caste woman.

The vice-president positions for 112-Shimlabari, 19-Shalkosa Gaon, and 122-Gaikhwa village panchayats are also reserved for Scheduled Caste women. Through these comprehensive measures, the Dhubri district administration is set to conduct an election that emphasizes inclusivity and broad participation from the local community.
