Assam: Dhubri Shopkeepers Protest Against Municipal Board’s Crackdown on Shopfront Extensions
Assam: Shopkeepers in Dhubri’s Chawk Bazar have closed their businesses in protest against what they describe as unfair enforcement by the municipal board. This move comes just days before Holi, one of the busiest shopping periods, creating distress for both traders and customers.
The protest stems from the municipal board’s sudden action against minor shopfront extensions in Chawk Bazar. Shopkeepers argue that while authorities are targeting their market, they have ignored severe congestion caused by vegetable vendors in nearby New Market and Hilal Market. These areas are reportedly nearly impassable due to vendors occupying entire roads, yet no enforcement action has been taken.
“This is blatant discrimination. The roads in New Market and Hilal Market are blocked entirely, but officials are only targeting us,” said one protesting shopkeeper.
The situation has gained significant attention from local residents, who view the crackdown as an example of selective governance. Many are questioning why enforcement is being applied unevenly, especially when other areas experience more severe traffic and encroachment issues.
The problem is exacerbated on Thursdays, which is the town’s designated “Haat day,” when the markets see a surge in shoppers. Traders argue that instead of addressing the overall urban congestion, authorities are unfairly penalizing specific businesses.
With Holi approaching, shopkeepers are worried about heavy financial losses, adding to their frustration. The business community is calling for a transparent and fair approach from the municipal board to ensure equal enforcement across all markets.
