Assam: Dibrugarh District Administration Takes Action Against Brahmaputra River Erosion

Guwahati, 11th May: The Dibrugarh District Administration has sprung into action to tackle the challenges arising from the rapid rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra River and soil erosion in the region. District Commissioner Bikram Kairi provided insights into the ongoing relief efforts, emphasizing proactive measures to mitigate the impact on affected communities.

According to Commissioner Kairi, soil erosion in Mohana Ghat has been a recurring issue, with intensification observed since April of the previous year. Immediate measures were implemented in response to the escalating erosion. Thirteen houses along the riverbank, deemed vulnerable, have been relocated to safer locations to ensure the safety of residents.

Assam has long grappled with the erosive force of the Brahmaputra River, whose powerful currents and shifting channels frequently lead to rapid erosion of riverbanks. This phenomenon poses significant threats to homes, farmland, and infrastructure along the river’s course. Dibrugarh district, situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra, is particularly vulnerable to such erosion, adversely affecting agricultural productivity and endangering human settlements.

The proactive measures undertaken by the Dibrugarh District Administration underscore the commitment to safeguarding communities and minimizing the adverse impacts of river erosion. As efforts continue to address the challenges posed by the Brahmaputra, collaboration between authorities and local communities remains crucial in effectively managing the region’s vulnerability to erosion and ensuring the resilience of affected populations.
