Assam: Discrepancies Found in Caste Certificate of Retired Principal Tripti Das

Guwahati, September 7 – An enquiry into the caste certificate of Tripti Das, the retired Principal-In-Charge of Women’s College, Silchar, has uncovered discrepancies following an investigation by the Circle Officer of Sadar Revenue Circle, Silchar.

The investigation revealed that Tripti Das, whose father was Late Jugendra Chakraborty and husband Late Indrajit Das, is categorized under the General Category. Despite her husband’s Scheduled Caste status, her father’s General Category status is the determining factor for her classification.

The Additional District Commissioner of Cachar confirmed the validity of a caste certificate issued to Tripti Das on November 28, 1997, from the Magistracy Branch. However, the Asom Anusuchit Jati Parisad, in a letter dated March 6, 2023, asserted that Tripti Das is a Brahmin by birth and accused her of misleading the certifying authority.

The certificate from the Sub-Divisional SC Development Board, Silchar, was found to list only her husband’s name, neglecting her father’s name, which is crucial for validating her claim to the ‘PATNI’ caste.

Tripti Das was provided an opportunity for a personal hearing on February 22, 2024, but failed to attend. Further actions and clarifications are pending based on the outcome of this enquiry.
