Assam Doctor Accused of Illegal Infant Sale, Flees Authorities

Guwahati: A shocking case of alleged infant trafficking has surfaced in the Sribhumi district of Assam, where a medical practitioner is accused of selling a newborn baby to a local couple.

The incident came to light after the district Child Protection Unit (CPU) received credible information regarding an illegal adoption that had occurred within the past few days.

The investigation, initiated by the CPU, confirmed the veracity of the claims, revealing that the doctor had allegedly fabricated documentation to facilitate the sale of the infant. The newborn was reportedly handed over to a couple residing in Sribhumi in exchange for a substantial sum of money.

Preliminary inquiries suggest that the infant’s birth mother, an unmarried woman, had initially sought the doctor’s assistance for an abortion approximately four months prior. However, due to the advanced stage of her pregnancy, nearly five months, the procedure was not performed at that time.

Subsequently, the doctor is alleged to have conducted a cesarean section on the woman at a private medical facility a few days ago. Following the delivery, the infant was purportedly sold to the couple, with the doctor allegedly creating fraudulent paperwork to legitimize the transaction.

Acting swiftly, the CPU successfully rescued the infant and placed the child under the care of the Sribhumi Child Welfare Committee (CWC). A formal police complaint has been filed against the doctor and other individuals implicated in the alleged crime. As of now, the doctor is reported to be absconding, evading law enforcement authorities.
