Assam: Dredging Operation Underway to Revive Brahmaputra River
In a desperate bid to revive the dwindling Brahmaputra River, a crucial dredging operation has been initiated in the Dhubri district of Assam. Four dredging boats, sourced from Bangladesh, have arrived to clear the riverbed and restore its navigability.
The operation, undertaken by Dharti Dredging and Infrastructure, Mumbai, is aimed at addressing the severe depletion of water levels in the river. The dredging work, which commenced recently, involves a team of 13 personnel. However, the boats have encountered challenges due to the river’s reduced depth, becoming stuck in the main channel.
The Brahmaputra River, once a vital lifeline for the region, has seen a significant decline in water levels, impacting various sectors, including trade, transportation, and fishing. The river’s reduced flow has disrupted the livelihoods of thousands who depend on it for their sustenance.
The dredging operation, which is expected to be completed within a month, is a crucial step towards restoring the river’s ecological balance and economic significance. By clearing the accumulated silt and debris, authorities hope to revive the river’s flow and ensure its long-term sustainability.
