Assam: Drugs worth Rs 15 crore seized in Karbi Anglong, 3 held

Guwahati: Three people were arrested in connection with the seizure of various substances including heroin and morphine, worth approximately Rs 15 crores from the Karbi Anglong district of Assam on Tuesday.

According to a senior police official, the trio was smuggling the drugs from Manipur to Siliguri in West Bengal.

Reportedly, they were intercepted at a location under the jurisdiction of the Dillai police station in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The officer told PTI that “our team initiated an operation after receiving a tip. They stopped the vehicle and took the three Manipur natives into custody. Additionally, the cops seized a sizable number of drugs.

The amount of heroin, morphine, and methamphetamine found in the seizure, which totaled 380 grammes, was believed to be worth roughly Rs 15 crores on the black market, the officer said.

He further said, “… this consignment is a branded one. The package is sealed and contains the iconic “Double UO Globe” product. This demonstrates unequivocally that the medicine came from the Golden Triangle network’s global market.

It may be noted that the term “Golden Triangle” refers to the area that encompasses the remote mountains of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. It is one of the oldest narcotics supply routes to Europe and North America and the primary opium-producing region in Southeast Asia.

Drugs produced in the “Golden Triangle” travel from Bhamo, Lashio, and Mandalay in Myanmar to Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland in India, with which it shares a 1,643-kilometer border.
