Assam: Drugs worth Rs 718 crore seized by state police in 2023
Guwahati, 7th December: In a significant drive against drug trafficking, Assam Police have achieved substantial breakthroughs throughout 2023, resulting in the confiscation of narcotics valued at an estimated Rs 718 crore.
This staggering figure underscores both the magnitude of the drug issue and the resolute response from law enforcement. According to Assam Police reports for the year 2023, significant quantities of illicit substances were seized, including 164 kg of heroin, 35,04119 Meth Tablets, 162 kg of opium, 29,114 kg of ganja, and 58,5492 bottles of cough syrup.
The year witnessed the arrest of 4,719 drug traffickers, with 2,852 cases of drug trafficking registered. Multiple operations contributed to these noteworthy results. In a notable instance in the Karbi Anglong district, heroin valued at over Rs 5 crore was intercepted, leading to the arrest of an individual. The operation involved intercepting a vehicle from Manipur, revealing 50 soap boxes containing 637.28 grams of heroin. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commended the police for their successful intervention.
Another significant operation took place in Silchar, where Cachar police conducted an anti-narcotics operation resulting in the seizure of 50,000 YABA tablets and the apprehension of one person. Additionally, the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police arrested four drug peddlers and seized opium worth Rs 6 crore from their vehicle.
These operations form part of a broader campaign against drug trafficking in the state, marked by the arrest of 4,719 traffickers throughout the year. The unwavering pursuit of drug traffickers by Assam Police has not only removed a substantial amount of narcotics from circulation but has also sent a strong message to those engaged in the illegal drug trade.
