Assam: Elephant Calf Rescued from Drowning in Aipuali River

Kokrajhar, 30th June: In a dramatic rescue effort near the Jabrang bridge in Assam’s Kokrajhar, an elephant calf was saved from drowning in the Aipuali River on June 30.

The incident began when the young elephant, presumably separated from its herd, was spotted struggling in the river, prompting immediate action from nearby residents. Eyewitnesses reported that the calf appeared distressed, fighting against the strong currents of the swollen river, likely exacerbated by recent flooding in the area.

The sight of the struggling calf quickly mobilized the local community, who sprang into action to save the young elephant. Using ropes and makeshift tools, the residents managed to pull the calf to the riverbank, an effort that drew significant attention and support from onlookers.

The forest department, alerted to the situation, arrived promptly to take over the operation. Trained wildlife rescuers and veterinarians assessed the calf’s condition, providing necessary medical attention and ensuring its safety.

The calf’s ordeal is believed to have started due to the recent floods, which have caused significant disruptions in the region, including altering animal habitats and displacing wildlife. The floods likely led to the calf’s separation from its herd, culminating in the dangerous encounter with the river.

Forest department officials expressed their gratitude to the community for their quick and selfless actions. “The public’s immediate response was crucial in ensuring the calf’s survival,” said a forest department spokesperson. “Their efforts, combined with the professional intervention of our team, have given this young elephant a chance at life.”

The calf has been transported to a nearby wildlife rehabilitation center, where it will receive ongoing care and monitoring. Efforts are also underway to locate the herd and reunite the calf with its family, a task that will involve tracking and coordination with wildlife experts.

As floodwaters continue to impact various regions, the forest department has issued advisories to the public, urging vigilance and prompt reporting of any wildlife in distress.
