Assam Embarks on Ambitious Police Modernization Drive

Guwahati: In a significant strategic shift, Assam is actively reshaping its police force to confront the complexities of modern crime, as articulated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The new approach prioritizes smart policing methodologies, advanced technological integration, and a renewed focus on serving citizen needs.

The blueprint for this transformation emerged from an intensive, 13-hour session during the fifth Superintendents of Police (SPs) conference. Held on Tuesday at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, the gathering saw Chief Minister Sarma and senior police leadership meticulously plot a course to future-proof the state’s law enforcement apparatus.

Chief Minister Sarma later took to X, stating, “Concluded a productive Day 1 at the Conference of SPs at LBP Academy, Dergaon. We deliberated for over 13 hours on a roadmap to equip Assam Police with the right tools and framework to deal with new-age crime, promote smart policing and keep citizen interests foremost.”

Discussions at the conference underscored a crucial pivot from conventional policing techniques towards a more technologically-driven, citizen-centric model. Key areas of focus included strategies to combat cybercrime, implement effective digital surveillance, enhance professional conduct within the force, and bolster institutional capabilities.

The Assam Police acknowledged this evolution, echoing the sentiment: “The Hon’ble CM’s vision, leadership & guidance, has today taken Assam Police forward on the path of transformation from an anti-insurgency oriented force to a citizen-centric service.”

This strategic overhaul represents a marked departure from the force’s historical emphasis on counter-insurgency operations. With the burgeoning threat of cybercrime, digital fraud, and sophisticated cross-border syndicates, the state’s leadership has stressed the imperative of adaptable reforms. Further initiatives from Chief Minister Sarma, who also holds the Home Minister portfolio, are anticipated as the conference continues.
