Assam: Escalating Man-Elephant Conflicts Claim Another Life in Kamrup District
Guwahati, 11th January: Man-elephant conflicts in the West Kamrup Forest Division area of Assam’s Kamrup District have taken a tragic turn with the recent death of Anil Rabha, a 43-year-old man from Katahbari Village. The fatal incident occurred at Nam Santipur village on Wednesday morning around 11 am.
The Forest Department was alerted about the presence of the elephant by Robin Rabha from Nam Santipur village at 5 am, following a sighting at 4 am. Despite the forest team’s patrolling efforts, the elephant attacked villagers, resulting in Anil Rabha’s death. The attack site is approximately 10 kilometers from the West Kamrup Forest Division office.
This incident follows another tragic encounter where Kamaleswar Boro lost his life to an elephant attack at Borkhal village last Sunday night. Villagers from Nam Santipur and Borkhal suspect that the same elephant might be involved in both incidents, causing fear among the local population. They have urged the Forest Department to take prompt action.
In a related note, concerns are rising in the Hahim area of the West Kamrup Forest Division along the Assam-Meghalaya border, where two elephant calves have died in the last three months, pointing to the pressing need for effective measures to address the escalating man-elephant conflicts.
