Assam: Eviction Drive Launched By Sadiya Admin To Clear Roadside Reserve Lands

Guwahati: The Sadiya district administration began an eviction campaign at the roadside reserve property along National Route 115 in the Chapakhuwa locality on Friday morning.

The drive was previously announced by the administration in a notification on Thursday.

Bulldozers were deployed to clear the roadside reserve property of more than 20 allegedly illegally constructed business structures on Friday.

According to an official of the administration, the campaign would also go from Medical Chariali localities to Pokaphool.

Speaking to the media, the official from the administration said, “We will continue our drive against the erection of commercial structures on reserve land adjacent to National Highway on both the sides. Many individuals have built these structures on each side of the National Highway illegally; some of them even constructed temples as well. Today we have started the eviction drive and it will continue further.”

It should be noted that since the BJP-led government led by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took office in May 2021, the state government has been undertaking back-to-back eviction efforts against illegal encroachments across a number of districts.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) also began an eviction campaign at the Bogapani locality in the Digboi police station under Tinsukia district, two days ago.

The situation became violent after security officers allegedly used a lathi charge against locals who tried to halt an NFR eviction effort.

According to reports, several locals were injured during the altercation with the security personnel and police.

However, the Digboi police claimed that no one was injured during the conflict.
