Assam: Excise Raid in Margherita Nets Illicit Liquor Worth Thousands
Guwahati, 22nd June: Under the command of Prasanta Dutta, District Superintendent of Excise (DSE) Margherita, a coordinated excise raid was conducted jointly by officials from Margherita and Digboi. The operation, aimed at cracking down on illicit liquor activities, targeted several key areas within Margherita police station’s jurisdiction in Tinsukia district.
The excise team, spanning locations like Namdang TE, Lalgula, Bargolai, Magargaon, and Thana Road, seized a significant quantity of illicit liquor during the raid. In total, six cases were detected, leading to the confiscation and destruction of various illegal substances. Among the items seized were 800 liters of fermented wash (FW), 40 liters of illicit distilled liquor (ID), and one distillation apparatus (DA). Furthermore, the team also recovered and destroyed 4.95 bulk liters (BL) of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) designated exclusively for sale in Assam.
In addition to these seizures, the excise officials uncovered two 750 ml bottles of McDowell’s No. 1 suspected of re-bottling, along with 0.65 BL of beer bearing suspicious labeling (Heman 9000).
Following the operation, authorities registered a case under Section 53(1) A of the Assam Excise Act, 2000, and under Section 61(B)(a) of the same Act as amended.
The successful raid underscores ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to curb illegal liquor trade in the region, ensuring public safety and adherence to excise regulations.
