Assam: Fake journalist arrested for extortion attempt in Cachar
Guwahati: Assam Police arrested a fake journalist for allegedly extorting money from an indigenous supari businessman in Cachar district.
The incident occurred in Sonai of the district.
The accused has been identified as Debasish Das.
As per reports, Debasish along with two other companions allegedly entered into the businessman’s home late at night and claimed to be journalists. Das then wanted Rs 50,000 and threatened to capture the footage of the supari businessman’s home.
However, the businessman immediately alerted the village guard and informed the police.
Upon receiving information, the police along with the village guard reached the spot and arrested Debasish Das. His two companions managed to flee the scene
Investigations revealed that Debasish Das is a fake journalist with no credentials and no connections to any media outlets. He was attempting to extort money from defenceless people while posing as a journalist.
A case has been registered against him for extortion and other relevant charges at the Sonai police station.
This incident has sparked concerns about the state’s growing fake journalist population and the requirement for stringent regulations to control the industry. The police have urged the public to be cautious while dealing with unknown individuals who claim to be journalists and report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately.
