Assam: Family Demands Probe Into Congress Worker’s Death as Hundreds Gather for Final Rites

Assam: The family of Congress worker and senior advocate Mridul Islam has called for a thorough investigation into his death, which allegedly occurred during a protest at Raj Bhavan on December 18.

The demand was echoed by hundreds of mourners who attended his funeral prayers (Janaza) in Kichmat Katmi, Boko.

The ceremony saw the presence of prominent leaders, including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Borah, MLAs Rekibuddin Ahmed, Nandita Das, Nurul Huda, Zakir Hussain Sikdar, A.K. Rashid Alam, and All India Congress Committee Secretary Manoj Chauhan, among others.

Addressing the gathering, APCC President Bhupen Borah delivered a strong critique of the BJP-led government, accusing it of mismanaging state finances by relying heavily on borrowed funds. Borah further called for the removal of the BJP government in Assam, citing public dissatisfaction with initiatives such as the implementation of smart meters.

Borah also reiterated the Congress’ demand for a judicial inquiry into the events leading to Islam’s death. He urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take responsibility for the incident and issue a personal apology to Islam’s family.

“The Chief Minister’s silence on this tragic matter is unacceptable,” Borah said, questioning the lack of accountability from the state’s leadership. He vowed that the Congress would continue its fight for justice, ensuring that the truth behind Islam’s death is brought to light.
