Assam Farmer Sarbeswar Basumatary Receives Padma Shri for Agricultural Excellence

Guwahati, 26th January: On the eve of Republic Day, Assam takes pride as Sarbeswar Basumatary, a 61-year-old tribal farmer from Chirang, is honored with the Padma Shri in the category of Others (Agriculture). Known as “Chirang ke Krishi Chiraag,” Sarbeswar, who transitioned from a daily wage laborer to a successful farmer, is celebrated for his outstanding contributions to agriculture.

Adopting a mixed-integrated farming approach, Sarbeswar overcame challenges and cultivated diverse crops, including coconuts, oranges, paddy, litchis, and maize. Despite facing adversity, he emerged as a luminary in the agricultural community.

Expressing gratitude for the prestigious award, Sarbeswar acknowledged the Indian government and emphasized the significance of youth participation in agriculture. He urged the younger generation to engage in farming, contributing not only to the sector but also generating employment.

Sarbeswar’s community-focused approach shines through as he generously shares his agricultural knowledge with fellow farmers, fostering increased efficiency and improved livelihoods. His remarkable journey, marked by resilience and enthusiasm, makes him a role model for the entire agricultural community in Assam.
