Assam: Ferry Develops Leak Mid-River Near Majuli, Passengers Rescued

Guwahati, 13th April: A potentially disastrous situation was narrowly averted in Majuli, Assam, on Saturday morning when a ferry carrying passengers developed a leak, prompting water to gush into the vessel. The incident occurred aboard the SB Senimai ferry, which was en route from Nimatighat on the Jorhat side to Aphalamukh ghat in Majuli.

Reports indicate that the leak was discovered around 7:30 am during the ferry’s early morning trip, causing panic among the passengers. Prompt rescue efforts were launched, and another ferry was swiftly deployed to safely evacuate all passengers from the sinking vessel.

Official sources reveal that there were a total of 80 passengers on board, accompanied by 26 motorcycles and four four-wheeled vehicles. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, although some passengers sustained minor injuries in the commotion.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, with initial findings pointing to overcrowding as a potential contributing factor. Further updates on the situation are expected as the investigation progresses, emphasizing the importance of ensuring safety measures on waterways to prevent such incidents in the future.
