Assam: Fierce Storm Wreaks Havoc in Teok’s Pukhuriporia, School Damaged and Homes Destroyed

Guwahati: A powerful storm swept through Rajabari Namchuk Pukhuriporia in Teok late on May 7, leaving a trail of destruction across the region and severely disrupting normal life. The storm’s intensity caused widespread damage to property, cut off essential services, and forced the suspension of classes at the local primary school.

The worst-hit was Pukhuriporia Primary School—the only educational institution in the area—where a massive uprooted tree crashed onto the premises. The impact tore off the school’s tin roof and inflicted serious structural damage, prompting authorities to halt all academic activity for the day.

In the surrounding villages, the storm’s fury was no less relentless. One concrete house suffered a direct hit from a fallen tree, breaking through its walls and injuring several family members. Multiple households were affected as roofs were blown away by high-speed winds, leaving interiors and possessions—books, documents, and furniture—exposed and ruined.

The storm also felled numerous trees along the Rajabari-Mudaijan road, rendering it completely inaccessible. Compounding the crisis, electricity lines were damaged, plunging the entire region into darkness and disrupting communications.

In the storm’s aftermath, local youth and community members mobilised swiftly to aid the affected, clearing debris and offering emergency relief. Residents and community leaders have called on government authorities for immediate assistance to restore power, reopen roads, and provide rehabilitation for the affected families, many of whom now face an uncertain recovery.
