Assam Flood: Around 21,000 People Affected In Four Districts

Guwahati, 15 June: Around 21,000 people in four districts of Assam have been affected in the first spell of flood, according to information provided on Wednesday by the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

In Lakhimpur district nearly 20,768 people including 2448 children are affected by the initial flood.

According to the ASDMA, the Singra River breached two embankments on Wednesday in the Lakhimpur district adding to a total of five embankments and six roadways that had been damaged by the constant rain.

“Following incessant rain, the water level of many rivers is rising up,” ASDMA said. 

The four affected districts are Kamrup (Metro), Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Cachar.

19 settlements under five revenue circles are currently under water and the flood has an impact on 1787 animals as well.

According to ASDMA, flood waters have submerged 13.50 hectares of crop land in the flood affected districts.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously had a video conference with the DCs and other top officers of the state administration to put all essential measures in place and ramp up flood preparedness and response mechanism before to the arrival of the monsoon.

He said, “With the monsoon setting in, in the state, all the government departments including NHAI, NHIDC, NDRF and SDRF should become alert to negotiate with the flood and reach out to the affected people.”

Additionally, he requested that ASDMA turn on risk communication and early warning systems to inform the public of the potential dangers posed by the flood.
