Assam flood: Death toll rises to 62, nearly 31 lakh people affected
Guwahati: At least 62 people have died across Assam as a result of floods and landslides so far this year.
Eight persons have died in the last 24 hours as a result of drowning in flood waters. Two were reported in the districts of Barpeta and Karimganj, one in each of Darrang, Hailakandi, Nalbari, and Sonitpur and eight persons are still missing.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority ASDMA, 51 people have died in floods and 11 have died in landslides thus far.
Around 31 lakh people were affected in 32 districts, including Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Karbi Anglong West, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Sivasagar, South Salmara, Tamulpur, Tinsukia, Udalguri.
The water level of all main rivers in the state is rising as a result of the torrential rains and many rivers are flowing above the danger level in numerous areas.
In various parts of the state, the water level of the Beki, Manas, Pagladiya, Puthimari, Kopili, Jia-Bharali and Brahmaputra rivers has risen above the danger level.
Meanwhile, the flood-affected districts’ administrations established 514 relief camps and 302 relief distribution centres with 1,56,365 individuals presently residing in the relief camps.
Apart from that, many flood victims are seeking refuge on roads, embankments and high ground after their homes were overwhelmed by flood waters.
According to the ASDMA data, flood waters have inundated 4,291 communities over 118 revenue circles, resulting in the loss of 66,455.82 hectares of crops.
In addition, more than 25.54 lakh animals were affected.
All district administration has been directed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure adequate food supply in all flood-affected districts, that relief operations should not be jeopardised and that all Deputy Commissioners should submit requests for additional human resources for relief operations to the Personnel Department.
