Assam flood: Over 2 lakh people affected in 20 districts, 5 dead

Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation worsened, affecting around 2 lakh people across 20 districts. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two people died in Cachar district due to flooding, while three people died in Dima Hasao owing to landslides.

The disaster has affected 1,97,248 individuals in 652 communities. The 20 districts that have been affected by floods are Bajali, Baksa, Biswanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Hojai, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong West, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur and Udalguri.

The worst-affected district is Hojai which has 78,157 people affected by the flood, followed by Cachar which has 51,357 people affected. According to the ASDMA study, 16645.61 hectares of agriculture are flooded.

Authorities have set up 67 relief camps and distribution centres, which will house 32,959 individuals. River Brahmaputra is flowing above its danger mark at Nimatighat while Kopili is flowing above the danger level mark at Kampur.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Fire and Emergency Services have all been dispatched to the flood-affected districts to conduct rescue operations.

Embankments have been breached in 16 areas, and many roads, bridges, and residences have been entirely or partially damaged, said a report of ASDMA.

On the other hand, Dima Hasao is isolated off from the rest of the state. The ASDMA bulletin stated that “all roads and trains going to Haflong have been closed since May 15.”

Meanwhile, 119 passengers trapped at Ditokcherra in Dima Hasao were rescued by the Indian Air Force.

Railways are presently attempting to fix the damaged line at Lumding-Badarpur section in Dima Hasao and re-start train services to South Assam, Manipur, Tripura, and Mizoram, according to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

Pictures of damaged New Haflong Railway Station surfaced on social media. The station was entirely engulfed in rubble, while an empty passenger train stood at the station.
