Assam Flood Situation Improves, but Over 3.5 Lakh People Affected Across 11 Districts
Guwahati, 18th July: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Thursday as waters began receding from several areas, yet more than 3.5 lakh individuals across 11 districts continue to face the impact, according to an official bulletin.
Major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, remain above danger levels at multiple points, exacerbating the ongoing crisis in districts such as Cachar, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Sivasgar.
Dhubri remains the worst-hit district with close to 80,000 people affected, followed by Nagaon with 77,500 and Cachar with 72,000 affected individuals.
Although the number of affected people has decreased from over 4.04 lakh on Tuesday, the toll from this year’s floods, lightning, and storms in Assam has risen to 113, as reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority. Approximately 13,000 people have sought refuge in 66 relief camps, with an additional 19 relief distribution centers supporting over 11,000 individuals.
The floods have submerged 16,673 hectares of cropland, impacting more than 1,63,800 domestic animals and poultry. Despite improvements, rivers like the Brahmaputra continue to overflow at critical points like Dhubri, with similar conditions observed at Disang and Rukni.
Damage assessments have indicated significant harm to embankments, houses, roads, bridges, and other vital infrastructure across various districts, highlighting the extensive challenges faced by the affected communities.
