Assam Flood Situation Improves, One More Life Lost as Relief Efforts Continue
The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Wednesday, though one more person lost their life due to drowning, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The deluge continues to affect nearly 2.5 lakh people across eight districts.
- Fatalities: The latest death, reported from the Katigorah revenue circle in Cachar district, raises the total number of deaths from this year’s floods, landslides, and storms to 34.
- Affected Population: Approximately 2,47,000 people are impacted across the districts of Cachar, Dima Hasao, Hailakandi, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Morigaon, and Nagaon. Nagaon remains the hardest hit with over 1.4 lakh people affected, followed by Cachar with around 65,500, and Hojai with approximately 18,500.
- Relief Camps: The administration is operating 112 relief camps in five districts, sheltering 22,373 people, and 21 relief distribution centers in four districts.
- Aid Distribution: In the last 24 hours, authorities distributed 501.48 quintals of rice, 91.47 quintals of dal, 28.04 quintals of salt, and 2,685.07 liters of mustard oil to flood victims.
- Villages and Cropland: Currently, 375 villages are submerged and 5,055.6 hectares of crop areas have been damaged.
- Infrastructure: Floodwaters have damaged embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in Nagaon, Cachar, Hojai, Karimganj, Morigaon, and Nagaon districts.
- Rivers: The Kopili river is overflowing at Kampur and Dharamtul, while the Kushiyara river is above the danger level at Karimganj.
Over 32,200 domestic animals and poultry have been affected by the floods.
As floodwaters begin to recede, relief and rehabilitation efforts are in full swing to support those still suffering from the effects of the deluge.
