Assam flood situation worsens, over 34000 displaced

Guwahati, 17 June: Assam’s flood situation deteriorated as nonstop rain inundated new areas across 11 districts affecting more than 34,000 people.

According to the daily flood report published by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the majority of rivers including the Brahmaputra are continuing their trend of rising water levels at various locations even though none are currently flowing above the danger threshold.

34,189 individuals including 14,675 women and 3,787 children are suffering as a result of the flood. As the rain persisted in the state on June 15, the number of persons impacted by the flood waters rose from around 29,000 in three districts.

Bishwanath, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Tamulpur and Udalguri are among the affected districts.  Over 23,516 people live in Lakhimpur which is the area severely affected by the flooding followed by Dibrugarh (3,857), Darrang (2231), Bishwanath (2231) and Dhemaji (1,085).

There have been established eleven relief distribution stations, eight of them are in Lakhimpur and two in Udalguri.

According to the ASDMA, floods have had a negative impact on 77 villages overall and have devastated 209.67 hectares of cropland in Assam.

There have been four breaches, two in Lakhimpur and two in Udalguri. According to the ASDMA, significant erosion has been observed in the districts of Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong West, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri.

Landslides have also been reported from some parts of Dima Hasao and Kamrup districts following heavy rainfall, the report said. 

Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged by flood waters in Baksa, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Nalbari and Udalguri districts.
