Assam floods: Amid heavy downpour, flood situation worsens in Kampur, Kopili
Guwahati: The Kopili River in Nagaon district is filling up quickly with water after Assam has seen nonstop rain for the previous few days.
After embankments were washed away by the intense rains, more than 50 villages were affected by the floodwaters. Currently, the water has totally flooded many areas in Kampur.
Many roads in Kampur are being crossed by floodwater. Food and drinking water are in short supply for flood victims. People are seeking refuge in schools as they deal with a dire scenario.
Rescue efforts are being carried out in Bokulguri in Kampur by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in the interim.
The water levels of the Borpani River, which flows through Kampur, have also been affected by the opening of the Karbi Langpi Hydropower Project’s gates.
In 25 districts, under 72 revenue circles, and throughout the state, more than 11.09 lakh people have been impacted. In the past 24 hours, up to four people perished in the state.
In numerous locations, the Manas, Pagladiya, Puthimari, Gaurang, and Brahmaputra rivers have water levels that are above the danger level.
1,510 villages are currently under water, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The state’s train timetables were also hampered by persistent rain and water logging, and numerous trains had to be partially cancelled or redirected.
Ten villages in the Kalaigaon area were buried by floodwaters on Thursday, washing off the Kalaigaon-Udalguri route. More than 7,000 residents in the Tamulpur district were impacted. Landslides on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of four individuals in Guwahati.
