Assam Floods: DGP Urges Caution on Highways, Kaziranga Implements Wildlife Safety Measures
Guwahati, 1st July: As floodwaters continue to inundate Assam, Director General of Police (DGP) G P Singh issued a critical advisory, stressing heightened caution on highways due to increased wildlife crossings. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Singh highlighted the perilous conditions faced by motorists and wildlife alike during floods. Visuals shared depicted elephants and a deer navigating a highway, underscoring the need to prioritize animal safety during flood distress.
“Please exercise extreme caution while driving. In times of flood distress, our co-inhabitants have the primary right of way on highways,” Singh emphasized.
Simultaneously, Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve authorities have initiated stringent safety protocols following directives from a recent meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. These measures, outlined in notifications to Superintendents of Police in Nagaon and Golaghat, are aimed at safeguarding wildlife during peak flood periods.
Key directives include diverting heavy vehicles from NH 715 to the North Bank and restricting nighttime travel of private vehicles, except for local traffic. These steps are crucial to ensure the safe movement of wild animals and mitigate the risk of road accidents.
These initiatives are underway as water levels in the Brahmaputra and Dhansiri rivers continue to rise above danger levels. Effective July 1, 2024, compliance with traffic diversions on NH 715 is strongly advised to uphold the safety of both residents and wildlife during this challenging flood season.
