Assam Floods: Kaziranga National Park Submerged, Wildlife Protection Measures Intensified
Guwahati, 1st July: Due to heavy rainfall in Assam, Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) are experiencing flooding, with 61 out of 233 camps submerged. Sonali Ghosh, the Field Director, highlighted that the Agoratoli range is the hardest hit, with 22 forest camps underwater.
In response, park authorities have initiated measures to safeguard wildlife, including the installation of speed sensor cameras along National Highway 37 and increased deployment of forest guards. These efforts are aimed at reducing vehicle speeds to prevent animal casualties during their migration to higher ground.
The flood situation in Assam has escalated, affecting more than 2.62 lakh people across 12 districts. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal conducted a firsthand assessment in his constituency of Dibrugarh, instructing officials to take immediate steps to mitigate the impact.
Tragically, the death toll has climbed to 34, with two children drowning in Dhemaji district on June 30. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) remains vigilant, continuously monitoring the situation as floodwaters inundate new areas.
The affected districts include Kamrup, Karimganj, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Majuli, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, and Jorhat. As Assam grapples with the second wave of flooding, state authorities are actively engaged in providing relief and support to affected communities.
The flooding of Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for housing two-thirds of the world’s one-horned rhinoceros population, underscores the ongoing environmental challenges posed by Assam’s annual monsoon floods.
