Assam Floods: Over 1 Lakh Affected, Relief Measures Underway

Guwahati, 23rd June: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the Kushiyara river in Karimganj has crossed the danger mark, leading to severe flooding affecting more than 1 lakh people across the state. As of June 23, 2024, 10 districts, 27 revenue circles, and 968 villages remain inundated, impacting 1,17,212 individuals.

CM Sarma disclosed that 134 relief camps have been established, accommodating 17,661 people, along with 94 relief distribution centers actively providing assistance to those affected. Despite some respite due to receding rainfall in certain areas, over 3.90 lakh people continue to be affected by floodwaters in Assam.

According to officials, 19 districts are still grappling with flood-related challenges, with the overall death toll from this year’s floods, landslides, and storms reaching 37, while one person remains missing.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to convene a high-level meeting on June 23 to assess the country’s preparedness in managing floods during the upcoming monsoon season. This meeting aims to evaluate and enhance flood management strategies nationwide in anticipation of the monsoon’s impact.

The meeting underscores the government’s proactive approach in addressing the challenges posed by annual monsoon-induced disasters across various regions of India.
