Assam Floods: Over 3.90 Lakh People Affected as Situation Remains Grim

Guwahati, 22nd June: Despite a slight improvement in the flood situation due to receding rainfall in some parts of Assam, over 3.90 lakh people are still grappling with floodwaters across 19 districts, officials reported on Saturday.

The death toll from this year’s floods, landslides, and storms has risen to 37, with one person still missing. The affected districts include Kamrup, Tamulpur, Hailakandi, Udalguri, Hojai, Dhubri, Barpeta, Biswanath, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Baksa, Karimganj, South Salmara, Goalpara, Darrang, Bajali, Nagaon, Cachar, and Kamrup Metropolitan.

As of Friday evening, a total of 3,90,491 people remained affected. This number is a slight decrease from the 4.09 lakh reported on Thursday, although the number of flood-hit districts has not changed.

Karimganj is the worst-affected district, with over 2.40 lakh residents impacted by the floods. Major rivers, including the Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul, and the Barak at BP Ghat and Kushiyara in Karimganj, are flowing above the danger level.

In response to the crisis, more than 100 relief camps have been established, providing shelter to over 15,000 people. Additionally, 125 relief distribution centres are operational.

The floods have caused extensive damage to houses, cattle sheds, roads, bridges, embankments, and other infrastructure across various districts, officials added. The state continues to monitor the situation closely and provide necessary assistance to the affected populations.
