Assam: Floods Ravage Golaghat Villages as Rivers Swell

Golaghat, Assam – A relentless onslaught of monsoon rains in neighbouring Nagaland has sent the Dhansiri, Ghiladhari, Makrong, and Kalia rivers surging past their banks, leaving a trail of devastation across several villages in Assam’s Golaghat district. The rising waters have submerged homes and vast stretches of farmland, forcing hundreds of residents to abandon their lives and seek higher ground.

The plight of Mouthgaon and Rajanakhat villages is particularly dire, with locals painting a grim picture of their current reality. Residents express a profound sense of abandonment, claiming that official assistance and rescue teams are conspicuously absent. “All the houses here have been submerged in water,” lamented Bipin Bora, a resident of Mouthgaon. “No one has come to see the situation here. There are so many children here, but no one has come to inquire about anyone.” He added, with a visible tremor in his voice, that children have been precariously sheltered in makeshift bamboo structures erected atop submerged homes.

Jyoti Bora Das, another resident caught in the throes of the calamity, reiterated the growing despair. “It has been four or five days… Many houses have been submerged here. Everyone’s farms have been submerged.” The immediate aftermath of the floods has left villagers grappling with immense losses, both personal and agricultural.

As district authorities maintain a perplexing silence on the unfolding crisis, the affected populace is raising an urgent plea for immediate relief and robust rescue operations. With forecasts predicting more rainfall in the coming days, the humanitarian situation in Golaghat district remains precariously balanced, demanding swift and decisive action.
