Assam Floods Worsen: Death Toll Surpasses 90, Massive Relief Efforts Underway
Guwahati, 16th July: The flood situation in Assam has escalated, with the death toll now surpassing 90, as reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Over 5 lakh people spread across 18 districts are currently affected by the deluge, with Cachar district bearing the brunt of the disaster.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached out to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to assess the dire situation and assured central assistance, including support from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Shah’s outreach was part of his efforts to engage with flood-affected states, including Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
The floods have submerged 1,342 villages in 52 revenue circles, causing extensive damage to over 25,000 hectares of crop area. Key rivers such as the Brahmaputra, Burhidihing, and Disang are flowing above danger levels at various points across the state, exacerbating the crisis.
Currently, more than 58,000 people have sought refuge in 172 relief camps and distribution centers spread across 13 districts. The disaster has also taken a toll on nearly 284,000 domestic animals, underlining the widespread impact of the calamity.
Districts severely affected include Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Sivasagar.
The state government, bolstered by support from central agencies, is actively engaged in relief and rescue operations. However, logistical challenges persist in reaching all affected areas promptly and providing essential aid.
As Assam continues to grapple with this ongoing crisis, the primary focus remains on intensifying rescue efforts, ensuring the distribution of essential supplies to displaced individuals, and formulating long-term strategies for flood recovery and mitigation.
