Assam Floods Worsen: Over 161,000 Affected, Death Toll Rises to 26
Guwahati, 19th June: The flood situation in Assam has escalated dramatically, impacting 161,209 individuals across the state. The recent death in Hailakandi district brings the total fatalities to 26, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Continuous heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has submerged 470 villages in 28 revenue circles across 15 districts.
The districts affected include Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Karimganj, Goalpara, Nagaon, Chirang, and Kokrajhar. Among these, Karimganj is the hardest hit, with 152,133 people affected, followed by Nagaon with 5,247, Kokrajhar with 900, Biswanath with 818, and Nalbari with 676 individuals affected.
The Kopili River in Kampur, Nagaon district, is flowing above the danger level, worsening the flood conditions. Currently, 5,114 people are sheltered in 27 relief camps in Karimganj, while 17,935 non-camp residents are receiving aid at relief distribution centers in Hailakandi and Karimganj districts. Additionally, 93,895 animals have been affected by the floods.
Infrastructure damage is extensive, with eight road damage incidents recorded in Biswanath, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri districts. There have also been two embankment breaches in Lakhimpur and five instances of embankment damage in Biswanath.
Urban flooding is reported in Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), and Kokrajhar districts, affecting 532 people in Kokrajhar. Waterlogging in parts of North Guwahati (Wards 4, 5, and 6) and various areas in Guwahati such as Bamunimaidam, Chandmari, Anuradha, and Gandhi Basti occurred due to heavy rains on June 18, 2024. Dispur experienced waterlogging in multiple locations, including Sijubari, Hatigaon, and Kahilipara. Azara saw waterlogging at Natun Basti and Daharapur Chowk due to the heavy downpour.
As Assam grapples with the rising waters, relief operations are intensifying to support those affected by the floods, providing essential aid and shelter to the displaced populations.
