Assam: Floodwaters from Surma Kushiyara River Inundate Karimganj Town, Impacting Local Traders
Guwahati, 31st May: Karimganj town is grappling with severe flooding as the Surma Kushiyara River’s water levels continue to rise, inundating key roads and disrupting local trade activities. Despite the absence of recent rainfall, water levels have remained alarmingly high, causing ongoing panic and significant disruption.
The Kushiyara River breached its embankment and entered the city area in the afternoon, crossing the danger mark and exacerbating the situation. Although the water levels of the Kushiyara, Longai, and Singla rivers in Karimganj district have stabilized, they have yet to recede, maintaining a state of alarm.
Several areas, including Madan Mohan Road and Shyama Prasad Road, are experiencing water accumulation. The Dashami Ghat on Kalibari Road has been closed due to the rising water level of the Kushiyara River. The persistence of high water levels at wholesale business establishments on Madan Mohan Road has caused significant concern among shopkeepers.
Authorities have issued warnings to Karimganj residents, advising caution as the water levels in local water bodies, including the Kushiara, Barak, Longai, and Singla rivers, have surged to dangerous heights. The advisory specifically warns against engaging in activities such as selfies, photography, swimming, or other adventurous pursuits in these areas due to the heightened risk to personal safety.
Officials underscore the need for residents to remain informed about the flood situation and to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The alert is a reminder of the severe threat posed by the rapidly rising water levels, urging the community to exercise vigilance during this critical period.
