Assam: Foreign cigarettes seized in Lumding
Guwahati: A coordinated effort between the Customs Department and Lumding Police culminated in a major seizure of smuggled foreign cigarettes, effectively disrupting a significant illicit trade route. The operation, executed along the bustling National Highway 27, yielded a consignment valued at over Rs 8 lakh.
The targeted interception occurred along the Silchar-Lumding route, where authorities successfully halted a truck bearing registration number AS 01 MC 8831. Upon inspection, the vehicle was found to be carrying 480 cartons of Burmese-origin cigarettes, concealed within its cargo. The illicit goods were reportedly being transported from Sonari Haat in Silchar and destined for distribution in Guwahati.
The driver of the truck, identified as Rahan Hussain Laskar, was apprehended at the scene. He is currently in custody as law enforcement agencies delve deeper into the intricate web of this smuggling operation, seeking to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the distribution network. The focus remains on uncovering the source and wider network behind this illegal movement.
The strategic location of Lumding, with its railway network and the vital NH-27, has increasingly become a focal point for contraband trafficking. In response, authorities have heightened their vigilance and enforcement activities to stem the flow of illicit goods through these critical transit corridors.
