Assam Forest Department Seizes Two Illegal Band Saw Mills in Dhubri

Guwahati: In a significant operation to curb illegal timber-related activities, two band saw mills were seized near Airkata Bazar in Assam’s Dhubri district on January 12. The operation was led by Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Hiranya Pathak, following a tip-off about unauthorised mills operating under the jurisdiction of the Dhubri Forest Department.

A team, supervised by Range Officer Sofikur Rahman and accompanied by protection range staff, conducted the raid near the Meghalaya border. The illegal mills were dismantled on-site, and all mechanical equipment associated with their operations was confiscated.

Speaking about the crackdown, DCF Pathak reiterated the department’s commitment to protecting the environment and biodiversity from the threats posed by such unauthorised operations. “Such illegal activities significantly harm our ecological balance, and we are determined to act against them,” he said.

The seized equipment has been taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for running the mills. Authorities have urged the public to report any illegal activities to help safeguard the region’s natural resources.

This operation underscores the Forest Department’s dedication to enforcing laws aimed at preserving Assam’s rich biodiversity and combating environmental degradation. Further actions are expected as part of the department’s intensified efforts in the region.
