Assam: Forest Officials Nail Timber Smugglers on NH-37 in Late-Night Kaziranga Swoop
Guwahati: In a decisive move against illegal logging, forest officials attached to the Bagori Range of Kaziranga National Park successfully intercepted a truck laden with smuggled timber on National Highway 37 during a late-night operation. The significant seizure underscores the persistent efforts of authorities to curb environmental crimes impacting the region.
Sources close to the operation revealed that the illicit consignment originated from the Karbi Anglong district and was being transported without the requisite permits. A vigilant patrolling team, undertaking a routine surveillance drive, flagged down the truck, bearing registration number AS12CC3487, on suspicion. Upon inspection, it was confirmed that the vehicle was indeed carrying timber without proper documentation, leading to its immediate detention.
Forest officials acted with commendable alacrity, taking the driver into custody for further questioning. This apprehension is seen as a crucial step in unravelling what is believed to be a much larger syndicate involved in the illegal timber trade. Such clandestine activities pose a grave and continuous threat to the delicate biodiversity and vital forest cover that defines the region. Authorities have wasted no time in launching a comprehensive investigation into the incident, aiming to trace the exact origins of the seized timber and identify all other individuals implicated in this smuggling ring.
