Assam Forges Ahead with Governance Overhaul, Adds 10 New Co-Districts
Guwahati, Assam — In a significant move aimed at decentralising power and bringing administration closer to the people, the Assam government is set to inaugurate 10 new co-districts, expanding the state’s administrative network to 49 such units. The initiative, hailed by the Chief Minister’s Office as a step towards “enhancing governance at the grassroots,” will see the new blocs come into operation over the next two days.
The newly formed co-districts, which were carved out of existing districts, are strategically located across the state to improve access to public services. These include Boko-Chhaygaon and Palashbari in Kamrup district, Borsola and Rangapara in Sonitpur, Mariani and Teok in Jorhat, Makum and Digboi in Tinsukia, Dholai in Cachar, and Dudhnoi in Goalpara. Out of these, eight are scheduled for inauguration on Tuesday, with the remaining two to follow on Wednesday.
This latest phase follows a successful first phase last year, where 39 co-districts were rolled out on October 4 and 5. The co-districts are envisioned as crucial hubs for administrative functions, empowered to handle a wide range of responsibilities. These include land revenue matters, developmental projects, magisterial duties, and the administration of various welfare schemes. Officials believe this decentralised structure will not only boost administrative efficiency but also significantly improve the delivery of public welfare to the remotest corners of the state. The move underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening local governance and ensuring that citizens have easier access to essential services without having to travel long distances to district headquarters.
