Assam: Former Congress MLA Klengdong Engti Set to Join BJP

Guwahati, 22nd March: Former Congress MLA Klengdong Engti, a prominent figure in the hill districts of Assam, is poised to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today in Guwahati, marking a significant political development that could reshape the region’s political dynamics.

Engti’s move comes in the wake of the Congress’s setback in the 2022 Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) election in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong, where the party faced defeat. Following this, Kharsing Engti, another influential Congress leader in the hill districts, resigned from the party.

Kharsing Engti, a former HAD minister and key Congress figure in the region, had served as a cabinet minister in the late Tarun Gogoi-led Cabinet. He cited the Congress’s poor performance in various elections, including the MAC election, as the reason for his resignation.

In his resignation letter, Engti expressed his dedication and commitment to the party but stated that he felt morally obligated to step down from his positions within the Congress due to the party’s electoral losses.

Engti’s decision to join the BJP is expected to have a significant impact on the political landscape of the region, signaling a shift in alliances and potentially influencing future elections.
