Assam: Gauhati High Court Hears Forest Department’s Update on Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary Boundary Rationalisation
Guwahati, May 29, 2024 — The Forest Department informed the Gauhati High Court that it has completed the rationalisation process of the boundary of Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary. In its submission, the department noted that the finalisation of the boundary requires the approval of the State Cabinet, in accordance with the Assam Rules of Executive Business, 2023.
The department stated, “As per the Assam Rules of Executive Business, 2023, approval of the State Cabinet will be required for the finalisation of the same.”
Additionally, the Forest Department explained that the matter could not be presented to the State Cabinet earlier due to the operation of the Model Code of Conduct. Consequently, the department has requested additional time to issue the final notification of the sanctuary’s boundary once it secures the necessary Cabinet approval.
The division bench of Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice Suman Shyam granted the requested time extension, scheduling the next hearing for the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) after six weeks.
This development follows ongoing efforts to delineate and protect the boundaries of Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary, ensuring legal and administrative clarity for conservation initiatives.
