Assam: Gauhati High Court Rules Naba Kumar Sarania Ineligible to Contest Elections in Kokrajhar
Guwahati, 18th April: The Gauhati High Court has rendered a verdict declaring Naba Kumar Sarania, the incumbent Member of Parliament representing Kokrajhar constituency in Assam, ineligible to contest elections in the region.
The verdict emanates from a dispute concerning Sarania’s ethnic certificate, which has been a focal point of contention in recent legal proceedings. The Guwahati High Court affirmed that Naba Kumar Sarania does not belong to the scheduled tribe (ST) category, thus rendering him ineligible for candidacy in the region.
Naba Kumar Sarania, a prominent figure in Indian politics, has served as an Independent candidate and subsequently as a member of the Gana Suraksha Party since 2014. However, the recent court ruling casts uncertainty on his ability to continue representing Kokrajhar in the Lok Sabha.
The controversy surrounding Sarania’s ethnic certificate has persisted, with the High Court’s decision marking a crucial juncture in this legal dispute.
Sarania had previously alleged a conspiracy orchestrated by the Assam government, accusing certain individuals of endeavoring to undermine his position and electoral prospects in Kokrajhar.
Addressing the media earlier, Sarania reiterated his stance, asserting that deliberate efforts have been made to impede his political career in Kokrajhar.
