Assam: Gauhati High Court to Address Land Dispute Between Hindus and Muslims in Karimganj
Guwahati, 4th October: The Gauhati High Court is scheduled to hold a pivotal video conference today at 10:30 AM to address the ongoing controversy surrounding land purchase and sale transactions between Hindus and Muslims in Karimganj district.
The Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj, Pradeep Kumar Dwivedi, has been summoned to attend the virtual hearing following a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by local lawyer Kabir Ahmad. The case, registered as WP(C)/5020/2024, raises concerns about the legality and fairness of land transactions involving members of the two communities.
In a previous session on September 27, the High Court had instructed the Assam government and the Karimganj administration to submit their positions on the matter by October 3. However, the absence of a formal response from the authorities has led the court to seek further clarification from the Deputy Commissioner during today’s conference.
The issue has garnered significant attention in the region, with concerns about potential social and communal tensions stemming from the ongoing land transactions. The High Court’s decision today could have far-reaching implications for property laws and communal relations in the district.
Further developments from the court session are awaited.
